COUNCIL OF TEN. In the 1960s, unrest over the Vietnam War and the burgeoning drug culture had an effect on the entire nation. Rebelling against authority and tradition became commonplace. No school was spared, private or public. There was great anxiety over bridging the gap between students and adults. Wallace Burr remarked, “I am very concerned about the rebellion of youth. I am dismayed and often displeased. What I would like to see them do is offer some constructive alternatives.” In order to bridge this gap between faculty and students, a unique system of faculty-student representation on a governing council called the Council of Ten was started at the Upper Campus. Besides governing, the Council of Ten was in charge of scheduling events such as off-campus trips and concerts. Above is the 1967 council in session. This council served as a precursor to today’s student council.
